Advanced Animal Tracking

Course Description

bear-scratchSeeing an animal in the woods is a pretty cool experience. Even cooler than that is watching the animal while it is unaware of your presence. Better yet, let's find a trail that we follow to that animal, all the while being tuned in to all of the other stories that are unfolding around us. This workshop will prepare participants for an upcoming Cybertracker Trailing Evaluation.

  • Track identification
  • Interpret animal gait patterns
  • Trail animals through the woods
  • Discuss ways to distinguish fresh from old tracks/sign
  • Additional species identification by track morphology and other signs
  • Practice camouflage and awareness skills to maximize opportunity to see animals

The majority of this workshop will be spent outside putting the concepts you learn to use. Most of the class will be spent outside, and walking off trail. Bring appropriate clothing (subdued colors are preferred) and be prepared to walk a couple miles off trail each day. With the class size limited to 6, you will have plenty of one-on-one time with the instructor. Lodging and meals not provided, but local camping areas and hotel information will be provided upon registration.
